Government that Works

Energy and the Environment

Provide 17,000 inspections of new wells drilled by 2020 in order to protect our natural resources and residents.

Why is this goal important?

Pennsylvania is the second-largest producer of natural gas in the nation (behind Texas), and uniquely positioned to be a national leader in balancing environmental protection and economic development when it comes to natural gas. State government has an obligation to protect Pennsylvanians’ air, water, natural resources and public health.

What are we working on to reach this goal?

Governor Wolf has made investing more resources in inspections a priority. In addition to conducting the inspections, the Department of Environmental Protection is also working diligently to move more inspection process and procedures into the digital age, as many are still driven exclusively by paper. The Department of Environmental Protection also implemented monthly online production reporting for unconventional natural gas wells, to improve transparency in gas production that will be particularly useful for royalty owners and production forecasters.

The goals below will protect Pennsylvania’s rich natural resources for future generations while providing opportunities for recreation and economic activity.
